How to manage your energies instead of your time

Hi there,

Do you ever feel exhausted, overwhelmed, or burned out by your work? Do you struggle to balance your personal and professional life? Do you wish you had more time to do the things you love?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this is for you.

Time is constant, but energy is variable.

In this edition, I’ll show you how to optimize your performance and well-being by following a simple framework: Manage your energy first, then your time, and finally your task.

You see, the problem with working longer hours is that time is limited. You only have 24 hours in a day, and you can’t create more of it. Energy, on the other hand, can be renewed and expanded.

You can increase your capacity to do more and better work by managing your energy levels in four dimensions:

  • Body

  • Emotion

  • Mind

  • Spirit

Let me explain each dimension and how you can optimize it:

Body

This is the physical energy that fuels your actions. To optimize it, you need to,

  • set boundaries for work and personal life,

  • take time for rest and recovery,

  • schedule time for deep and inner work,

  • learn to delegate tasks that are not essential or enjoyable.

Emotion

This is the quality of energy that influences your mood and motivation. To enhance it, you need to,

  • be aware of how you feel at different times during the workday

  • choose how you respond to external pressures

  • use intermittent recovery to sustain positive emotions

Mind

This is the focus of energy that determines your attention and creativity. To sharpen it, you need to,

  • avoid multitasking and distractions

  • take breaks when necessary to recharge your mental energy

  • practice concentration by focusing on one thing at a time

Spirit

This is the energy of meaning and purpose that drives your passion and values. To access it,

  • you need to clarify your priorities and align them with your actions

  • allocate time and energy to the areas of life that matter most to you

  • live your core values in your daily behaviors

  • cultivate positive energy by telling yourself the most hopeful stories possible about the events in your life.

Managing your energies instead of your time is a game-changer. It will help you achieve more with less stress and more joy.

It will also help you tap into the energy of the human spirit, which is the internal force that drives you to pursue your goals and live fulfilling lives. It is an energy that can be harnessed for positive change and can be found within yourself.
